Description

Framed, from the original 1960s edition of 100. In late 1967 The Los Angeles Times named screen printing, pop art nun Sister Corta Kent as a ‘Woman of the Year’, along with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Jean King, and Newsweek put her on the cover. News of the Week is a definitive example of her work that blends intense and challenging spiritual themes with the visual language of advertising, and accidentally paved the way for the punk design ethos. Nun Corita Kent (1918-1986) is a talismanic figure in the screen print world. During the 1960s her distinct works of outsider art combined pop art, spirituality and protest. Warhol himself attended her shows, but elements within the religious establishment unfortunately labelled it ‘sinister’. A gallery dedicated to her was opened in Los Angeles during 2019.
