Nara’s work takes the ‘cutesy’ iconography of Japanese pre-teen pop culture and infuses it with a hard reality of adult life not taught at school – grown ups are out to get you. “I kind of see the children among other, bigger, bad people all around them, who are holding bigger knives…” says Nara of his subject’s motivations. Here, a signature Nara figure prepares to hold her own.
